IRL hosting: what an IRL streaming server is, and how it stops the stream dropping

If you stream IRL from your phone straight to Twitch, the platform is watching your mobile signal. Lose it for two seconds in a lift and the broadcast ends: a new VOD starts, anyone watching gets an offline screen, and most of them leave.

An IRL streaming server (what people also search as IRL hosting or IRL server) puts a stable machine in the middle. The phone sends video to the server; OBS runs there, permanently online, and it is OBS that holds the connection to Twitch, Kick or YouTube. Twitch never sees your phone moving around the street — it sees a server that does not move.

When your signal drops, the stream does not.

OBS switches by itself to your "be right back" scene and comes back to camera when you have coverage again. For the person watching, nothing happened.

How it fits: phone → server → platform

Your phone → our ingest (SRT / SRTLA / RTMP) → your OBS → Twitch, Kick and YouTube. From the phone itself you start and stop, mute, change scenes, and bring up overlays or alerts.

That change sounds small and it changes everything. The phone's 4G stops being the cable holding the stream up. It becomes only the path as far as your OBS.

What an IRL server is not

Three mix-ups we hear every week:

  • It is not the app. Moblin (iPhone) and IRL Pro (Android) are the remote and the encoder in your pocket. You need them, and they are free, but on their own they still publish to the platform if you do not give them a destination. The server is that destination.
  • It is not an encoder (Belabox, LiveU, TvU). The encoder gets a camera onto the internet. You still need an OBS to receive it, put the scenes on, and publish. Chain: camera → encoder → OBS → Twitch. The encoder sits in front of the server, not instead of it.
  • It is not "the PC I already have at home". It can be, and that is free. It has to stay on all the time, with decent upload, and if it crashes while you are out there is no way to touch it. IRL hosting is that piece, already built, on a machine that is not in your living room.

If what you are missing is the street kit (grip, battery, second SIM), that is the equipment guide by budget. If what you are missing is the machine itself, what OBS hosting is is the same server from the other side: IRL or a 24/7 channel.

Who this is actually for

  • You already stream IRL and it keeps dropping. That is why almost everyone arrives. The server does not improve your coverage: it stops coverage being the bottleneck.
  • You do not want a PC running 24/7 at home. Not the electricity, and not whoever reboots it when it falls over.
  • You already have an encoder (Belabox, LiveU, TvU, GoPro). You still need the OBS that composes the broadcast. That is this product, not a different one.

What ours includes

A dedicated OBS, on real hardware, with a GPU. Ingest in Europe, the US and Asia. Automatic cut to "be right back". Control from the phone and remote desktop. Multistream to three platforms. Your overlays and alerts, set up before you go live. No setup fee and no contract.

The plan almost everyone takes: €24.99/month at 1080p 30 fps. 60 fps is €49.99. If you already have OBS at home and only want the relay, ingest is €9.99.

The server, ready to paste into the app

You pay, you get the details, you paste them into Moblin or IRL Pro and go live. It is usually minutes, not an afternoon of setup. Close to 40 channels use it every day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do IRL with just the phone, no server?

Yes. It is fine for finding out whether you enjoy it. Every coverage drop ends the stream and opens a new VOD. For streaming seriously, it falls apart at the first corner. That is level 1 of the equipment guide.

What is bonding, and do I need it for IRL hosting?

Bonding is joining two lines (the phone SIM and a router on a different network) to split the video. It is not required to use an IRL server: the server already saves the drop with "be right back". Bonding is the next step, so you do not even hit that scene.

Do I need a powerful phone?

No. The heavy work happens on the server. Any phone from the last few years that runs Moblin or IRL Pro is enough.

Is there a contract?

No. Month to month, no setup fee, cancel whenever you want.
